Before I tell you how and why I developed KID ESCAPE skills, I would like to introduce myself. I am a dad with three kids under the age of 13. My wife Julie and I have got our hands full just getting through the day, let alone thinking about the chance that some freak might want to kidnap and molest or murder our children.
Besides, most of the stuff we worry about never comes true any way. It's usually the event you never see comingthat knocks you off your feet.
When our son Andrew was around 14 months-old he got Bacterial Meningitis. A rare strain as a matter of fact, one of only nine known cases in the United States. The doctors didn’t give him much of a chance, but thankfully they were wrong, and two months later Andrew returned home from the hospital.
Ironically, just a few weeks later, a vaccine called Prevnar was released by the FDA that would have prevented this whole nightmare. One shot would have meant no coma, no kidney failure, dialysis or hearing loss for Andrew.
Here's the point of our story.
With Andrew’s bad luck still top of mind within our community, two local pediatricians couldn’t keep Prevnar in stock; parents were getting their kids vaccinated left and right. And then about about 18 months later, I got a call from our pediatrician’s office. They wanted me to write a story for their monthly newsletter about Andrew and how Prevnar might have prevented Bacterial Meningitis; becauseit’s not a required vaccine and now barely any parents were choosing to have their kids vaccinated.
And why weren't they?Becausewhen something bad happens it's human nature to be motivated and take action right away. When the news focuses on the latest tradegy; it's natural to ask, "What if this happened to my children?".
By the way, did you know most abductors are molesters not murderers?I'll never forget the grandfather who said to me in a choked up voice after his grandson learned KID ESCAPE moves that he was abducted and assaulted over 40 years ago and he'd never told anyone... until now.
KID ESCAPE is dedicated to all children who have been abducted, assaulted or molested and thought it was their fault (predators are experts at building trust then turning it into fear). There's no easy answer and nothing is perfect, but for me, if KID ESCAPE saves one child from a lifetime of damage, we've won.

Since earning a black belt in 1977, I've been fascinated with self-protection. During my senior year at Miami University way back when :) I had a documentary assignment and chose to interview people who escaped from attacks and abductions.
From the 11 year-old who crawled under a car to stop a kidnapper with a gun, the 9 year-old who chewed through duct tape, the 16 year-old who hid in her closet...
Or the women who stopped three abductors from tossing her into a van by sitting on the pavement and hugging a light post next to her car in a parking lot...
Or the college student who was being pulled from a laundromat by two guys but luckily slipped on spilled liquid detergent in the doorway and grabbed a table leg to stay.
Their split-second reactions were incredible and surprisingly non-violentbecause what they did had nothing to do with "fighting back" or battling force against force.
The notion that escaping from predators can be non-violent is counter-intuitive. Because when we think about "self-defense" we associate strength, striking, aggression and violence. After all, Physiologist Walter Cannon discovered the "fight or flight" response when we encounter a threat. So is it either fight or run?
After years of interviewing people who have survived violent confrontations, I've focused on a THIRD response - "FREEZE". And tragically, these first seconds are the most important, and there your kids are… frozen, like deer in headlights.
